Diploma in Management Studies (DMS)

The Diploma is the longest accredited management programme and typically lasts from 10 months (intensive) to 18 months. This diploma (traditionally known as the Diploma in Management Studies or DMS) is where the biggest variation happens between Awarding Bodies. For CMI for example, Diploma is the flagship programme and their "benchmark" standard for management competence, and therefore there are more restrictions on what you can and can't do in terms of which units are mandatory for example.

ILM and Edexcel (BTEC) take a similar view of the premium nature of a Diploma and so like CMI, there are more mandatory subjects. However in all cases, you still get quite a good range of choice as to which optional units you can select, enabling you to customise the programme to meet the needs of your business. Diploma in Management is available at Level 3 (First Line Manager) Level 5 (Middle Manager) or Level 7 (Senior Manager).

What does a Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) involve?

A Diploma gives you a full management qualification - in most cases, Diplomas also require an extended project which can be done in small groups, though assessed individually.  One of the key considerations for Diploma is ensuring that you get the spacing of the units and the structure of the course optimised to ensure that delegates maintain momentum but don't start to feel that they can't keep up with the written work based assignments.  As the longest course, the Diploma has the most assignments - typically between 8 and 10.

  • The Diploma in Management is the qualification that is most highly valued by managers and employers.

In order to build a Diploma in Management programme you need to consider:

    • What are the needs of your business and how will you prioritise these?
    • What are the specific development needs of the people you want to train?
    • How might units fit together in terms of what you have to do and what you choose?
